Connecticut homeowners inhabit a wide array of home styles. As the state is hundreds of years old – so are some homes. Most residences in our fair state range in age from 150 years to last year. The varied architecture can make you think twice about new windows…will they look right???

Stick frame construction of homes has been about for centuries. If your windows have seen better days and your curtains are flowing with the autumn wind, maybe it’s time to upgrade.

Specific architectural styles generally dictate the type of window to install. Manufacturers such as Simonton Windows, Anderson Windows, and Harvey offer a wide variety of styles to suit your home.

The Victorian

Stalwarts of the 19th century, many of the large and interesting homes dot towns across the state. Their grand porches, curious turrets and unusually shaped windows make for an interesting place to call home. Bow windows offer an abundance of natural light to brighten homes built before electricity. Smaller accent windows allow bright spots for stairways, while classic double hung windows allow for cross ventilation.

The Colonial

As one of the original 13 colonies there are an abundance of colonials in CT. Double hung windows generally grace this practical design. Classic 12 over 12 windows can easily be matched by leading window manufacturers – keeping the aesthetic yet making your home more energy efficient.

The Cape

Steep pitched roofs, dormers and doghouses are signature features of another practical home style. While they may have originally had windows with muntons, many can be seen with more simple double hung windows. Replacing them offers a chance to reclaim the look of the original cape style.

The Ranch

Comparatively newer homes in CT, the ranch became the symbol of suburbia. Base double hung windows fit right in, punctuated by a glass slider to enjoy the back yard. Also the Ranch Styles houses can be more Contemporary styles utilizing casement type "crank out" Windows and picture window combinations.  Some use geometric 1/2 rounds and transom styles. Though newer…it’s all relative as most were built 30 plus years ago and windows have past their prime.
