Tax Credits for Insulation Addition

Have you been putting off re-siding your house and adding additional insulation? It pays you to act before the end of 2011 so that you qualify for the up to $500 federal energy tax credit. What's more: new insulation and new siding will mean lower energy bills this winter. How can you lose?

Insulation and the Federal Energy Tax Credit

Although the cost of siding and installation is not included in the federal energy tax credit, the 2011 program DOES cover 10 percent of the cost of the insulation (not counting installation) up to $500 maximum if you purchase a qualifying product by December 31, 2011. This insulation must be added to an existing, owner-occupied residence, not a rental property or a newly constructed home. You can also add insulation to a new addition to your home and still qualify for the credit.

What Qualifies for the Tax Credit?

When re-siding a home, many homeowners take that opportunity to add additional insulation, always a good idea in the chilly northeast.  Among the products that qualify for the tax credit are batts, rolls, blow-in fibers, rigid boards, expanding spray and pour-in-place insulation. Sealing products such as weather stripping, caulk and house wrap also are covered under the tax credit program.
